what is leep?
LEEP stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. In our office and with the help of mild anesthesia, we use a wire loop heated by electric current to remove cervical tissue that has been identified as precancerous by a PAP smear. The electric current passes through the wire loop to cut away a thin layer of the tissue which is then sent to pathology for testing.
What to expect after procedure
It is normal to experience cramping for a few hours following your procedure, but should be minimal. We encourage you to return to your normal activities within 1-3 days and recommend you avoid intercourse or the use of tampons for up to 6 weeks. Your doctor will then review your pathology report and decide what future treatment might be needed.
